The battle system is called BLiTZ(no idea what it stands for...) and is played out through Missions.
Each mission is broken up into two different modes “command mode”, and “action mode”. In command mode you’ll be thinking up tactics by use of an over head map, by selecting a unit from said over head map the camera will then zoom thus entering Action mode were you take control of a single unit in a 3rd person view type situation, moving around freely in real time, doing as you please, until your enegy meter reaches 0. During action mode you will be able to to a wide array of moves such as ducking behind objects, leaping over obstacles, and all that other war type stuff. As you move Enemies will also move in real time, attacking whomever they can get their sight on. Your attacks depend on the character, some will have short ranged attacks, other will use long ranged weapons with you'll beable to aim as you please.
If you're happy with your units posistion or you run out of energy you can then end said units turn, and move on to the next. Once all your units have moved the game then swhiches to the enemies phase just like any other strategy RPG.
The game will feature a cast of 40 characters, which you'll beable to pick and choose whom goes into battle. Parties can be made of up to 10 characters. I have no idea if that inculdes things like tanks.

Valkyrie of the Battlefield is set to have a lot of story modes inbetween, and during action. The game takes place during World War II in Europe. Though the countries you will be fighting agasint will be fictitious...
As far as graphics go the game is using a new graphical system called CANVAS which is what you might call the evolution of 3D cel-shading. The new system is what gives the game it's beautiful water color painted looked.
So far no clear release date, but it is expected out in Japan sometime during 2008.
All and all this game is looking, and sounding like a great experience. I'm really interested in the action elements they look like tons of fun. Like I've said before I'm not too big into the strategy games however this game looks like alot of fun, hear's hoping more games start using this type of visual style! Finally a must get game for the PS3!
